Nede - Branding a Non-Profit

Friday, January 29, 2010

Nede is a new non-profit organization that makes it not only easy, but affordable to help people in need. I can talk in-depth about the branding of Nede since I am one of the co-founders and because we did the design over at C McConnell Design.

The "E" Mark

To capture Nede's tagline "grow some good" we turned each "e" in the logo into a leaf. We also wanted a mark that could be easily identified as a stand alone symbol - much like the Apple logo.

11 x 17 Poster

As part of a print promotion pack that users can download on Nede's Website, we created an 11 x 17 poster. The poster also illustrates "growing good" with a seed taking root. We wanted this to be bright and colorful with some cool details. The sky is made up partially of some paint while the dirt has some concrete texture in it. In the bottom right, the tree looks to be made out of some wrinkled paper. In this piece you can see the dots and lines that make up a lot of Nede's "look".

Brochure Cover

On the brochure we branched out a little and put a human face on the cover to add some humanity. In most cases, we have stayed away from photos of people because Nede's mission is universal and we didn't want people getting the wrong idea based on the first picture they saw. But, a large part of what Nede does is provide clean water to villages in Africa and we decided to showcase that on the cover of the brochure.

Website Design

The Website was actually the next thing we designed after the logo. We wanted plenty of white space and large text to tell visitors exactly what they can do with Nede. Again, we did not feature any photos of people on Nede's homepage, something very unusual for a non-profit with a professional Website - visitors will be able to see videos and pictures in the blog, so we wanted to push our mission on the homepage.

Green Screen Background

Nede will feature video updates so we needed a cool green screen background and this is what we came up with. The background is a little "washed out" so that the people talking will really pop against it.

Bulletin Inserts

These inserts were designed for advertising Nede in church bulletins and are unique among Nede's advertising materials in that they aren't visually "fancy" - they are plain and simple with the logo and colors standing on their own in order to focus on the message making it as simple to understand as possible.

$60 T-Shirt Design

For this particular shirt, the first thing your eye sees is the green splotch with $60 in it. This shirt is designed for students who have donated to Nede ($5/m totalling $60/y). Since students sit at desks, we wanted to pique the interest of the person sitting behind them when they are not paying attention to the lecture, so the artwork sits higher up on the shoulders to be visible over the back of a chair.
